hijab is the common word used to describe Muslim female modest clothing...

as a hijabi I could say that for many years my hijab was more of a symbol of my belief and political statement than a religious-spiritual experience... however, as I studied traditions of "covering" in different cultures in anthropological and theological settings, I have come to realise that it can be more than what I thought it was.

in a rather ironic way, the person who has given me the most inspiring description is a friend who is a non-Muslim, a theistic neo-pagan to be exact... and she told me: "how nice it is that you have a private temple you carry with you; a line that interferes with the ordinary and becomes the veil between the sacred and the banal."
